apparently theyre prone to cracking james,
the plate is there to reduce heat transfer to the carb- don,t forget to order 2 paper gaskets as well, they fit either side of the plate -use a smear of jointing compound on the faces
there are 4 studs & they all need to be in place, if u only use 3 studs you,ll get an air leak

When fitting, don't over-tighten the nuts or you'll risk cracking the new one.

Ok cheers. This sounds like a simple question but can I replace the stud, or does it mean I have to put a whole new manifold on?

James,
it's a stud, not a bolt and it will have unscrewed itself from the manifold, usually because late engines had no lock washers fitted to the 2 studs at the front of the carburettor.
Add some poor maintenance to the mix... :(

Refitting it should be straightforward, clean the threads and wind it back in, but make sure that you've got 4 lock washers to hand before starting to fit the new spacer block.

Urgh found problem.... Huge chunk of plastic carb base missing.... Along with a sheared stud bolt being held nicely in place by the bottom of carb.... WTF.... Ok so I'll get a plastic thing ordered.... Will the carb be alright with just three bolts for a while though? I've got a spare manifold but going to uni a week tomorrow :( Also... HOW THE HELL HAS THIS HAPPENED?
