The handbrake master cyl is simply put inline to the rear brakes, the pipe coming from the footbrake master cyl plumbs in where the reservoir would usually connect.


As in every master cylinder, when it is not being activated all the ports are open, and fluid can flow back and forth from the footbrake as though it isn't there. In a normally located master cylinder, as the brake is applied the first thing to happen is that the piston closes the port from the reservoir, and then goes on to pressurise the cylinder and activate the brakes. In this case the port to the front half of the brake system is closed, isolating the rear brakes, then the cylinder is pressurised and the rear brakes applied.

I've been speaking to an acquaintance about competing in 'auto solo' events, and looking at most of the courses they run there's at least one or two sections which would require a handbrake initiated skid.

I can think of a few other uses such as off roading etc.

Thanks for that Joolz. It makes sense now. Looks pretty simples too! The only cost is getting the car spares place to knock me up some new brake pipes, and the only real effort is running them to the handbrake lever/master cyl which could sit nicely on the seat runner. Much easier than making levers and cables pass through the backplates and running cables through the chassis etc. jolly good.

I've thought about this, say retro fitting GS rear hubs & discs w/ hydraulic clutch...
But then I think about how easy it would be to over cook it in a turn and end up in an arse first spin which ultimately ends like this:

Then I wonder if a front & rear sway/torsion bar would negate the effect..?

Electric valve on the front line, normally open, handbrake lever that operates master cyl, button in end of lever operates valve, complete rear bias.

As per Joolz drawing I used to install in rally cars back in the 90's. Just make sure the cylinder is mounted to somethiing very solid as there is quite a large force on it when you yank on the handbrake. Modern fly off hand brakes are vertical with pivot at the bottom and link to cylinder - horizontal. This requires you to use less force but more force on the cylinder mount. (Force * distance and all that)
