The pinion shaft is but covered in oil, so no worries unless not enough or old oil. This was the problem I think. The oil was disgusting. A thick glupe. Changed it out while I was there but the damage was done. Just need to figure out what damage.

 Re: Sticking Gearbox
It will most probably be the needle bearing between the input shaft and the mainshaft, both of which are located at the top of the gearbox with their bearings dependent upon oil 'splash'. The input shaft doesn't rotate when an A series vehicle is being towed, but the mainshaft does... ken Tripyrenees wrote: 2CViking wrote: Towing an a model is not a problem at all. Re: Sticking Gearbox
How tough is that job for a DIYer.. Accessible without removing the box or not ??
I have to take the engine out again anyway to put a new clutch in so it is just how far do I go with the strip down.
cheers

 Re: Sticking Gearbox
I would take out the whole gearbox and dismantle it and replace all bearings and synchromeshes, it is do-able for a diy., but not in 5 minits, will take you a whole week or so.... (doing it first time) If you don't need new tooth-gears you don't need to line everything out, you can put in the new bearings and synchromeshes and put it together again......
Try to find a good secondhand gearbox, would set you back 100 euro's in France I guess, do a oilchange put it in and drive it, then you can take care of the Original box in your own time....

 Re: Sticking Gearbox
Hi Ipgo That is a good idea. I have found this one close to us and I have bought some parts from this guy before. http://www.leboncoin.fr/equipement_auto ... tm?ca=16_sIt is possible to just change the gearbox and not the differential etc - is it? I can't seem to find it in the books. My engine has the standard clutch and not centrifugal like this one. Does the box just unbolt from the bell housing? If this is good then I will try and get it tomorrow on the way home from Toulouse.

I'm not sure about the traffic clutch, but I think you can put on your clutch..... maybee somebody else knows if it fits... take down the 4 bolts at the bellhouse of the gearbox and you can spit the engine from the gearbox... need to take the second silencer down first.

 Re: Sticking Gearbox
OK - I just checked and it is the same box - A331 96a.
My flywheel is attached to the engine where this centrifugal one is on the gearbox. But if they are the same box then it must be interchangeable.
Cheers

 Re: Sticking Gearbox
Are you going to the French National Meeting? It is very risky business to install a used gear box without knowing its past. There is a reason why it was removed. But if you're keen, try. You can always remove it again.

 Re: Sticking Gearbox
I can't make it to that one as our work season starts.
Do you know anyone that can do a full revision on mine. - I can be without it for a week or so.
