 engine
Im new to 2cv, but having recently bought a box of bits that the seller insists will build into a road going 2CV, im learning as i go. I have the engine split from the gearbox, simply to check the clutch out, and ive noticed that as im used to messing with VW beetles, i checked for end float by pushing the crank forward and backwards (used a screw driver and prized from the casting and the flywheel) the backlash measured just under half a millimeter as measured with a DTI. It actually looks more than that with the naked eye for some reason, but it is noticeable. Is this excessive? Is there any way of checking on the condition of the engine without running it? I'm borrowing a compression tester soon, Whats a fair price to pay for a good engine if i need a replacement? Cheers for now Paul

Crankshaft endfloat - 0.07 to 0.14mm. I would strip it down and have a good look inside. You can buy reconditioned crankshaft, pistons and barrels etc to rebuild a nice engine yourself.. Just take time and keep all bits safe etc..  We are here if you get trouble.

Id rather buy a good running engine, and perhaps play with an old one at a later date as i seem to have so much work to do that to pull an engine to bits would just add to my workload if you know what i mean? Im handy with most things mechanical, but Citroen seem to turn everything inside out and upside down, probably very simple, but to a newcomer, all very strange! Im making rear bumper mountings out of stainless steel soon, as i have a rusty pair to use as templates, but will have to "Borrow" some front ones if anyone has any they could spare? Cheers Paul

if it were me paul i would try running the existing engine first they are very hardy, it might be fine you might be able to get in contact with the previous owner and ask about it, andy

yep i'd say around 200 too for a good'un, maybe a tinkling more for a dyane 9:1..
where abouts are you based Paul? Maybe someone is nearby that can pop an eye in.
