I am trying to figure out the operation of the indicators on the AZU. A little different to what I have seen before.

I have two switches either side of the centre console. The toggle switch to the right is a on/off/on switch for turning on the left and right parking lights which are also the indicator lights. (This all works fine turning on either indicator light solidly)

Then there is a left and right switch to the left of the centre console which glows red when operated and then times out after a few seconds. This is called the "Time switch for direction indicator light" on my schematic - when left or right is selected it does turn red and then clicks and after a few more seconds goes off - but no other indicator light or rear lights operate.

Is this the indicator switch???

Do the wires from it go to a flasher unit?

I am only guessing but I think the switch unit acts as the flasher - but if someone can confirm this it will allow me to concentrate on testing the switch. Trying to search for info on it.

Looking at photos of your type of van they seem to have indicators high up on the side of the van. The circuit diagram on this page shows them also (I think)

I have been studying this site for the past hour or so. The diagram is a little blurred but I think the switch is the flasher unit somehow. Nothing on there about the operation, just the requirement for them

Funny to see the older AZ cars did not even have rear lights and just relied on the reflectors.

How complicated is this indicator switch. I think I have is sussed but cannot find any information about it on the internet.
It is a Scintex CTXM C2 6V. When operated to either the left or right, the switch clicks a small lever which is held back via a bimetallic strip (picture 1). Another bimetallic strip below (picture 2) I assume operates the blinker. After a few seconds the first bimetallic releases the lever to rest the switch.

I am going to test it again tomorrow as all the wiring to the indicator lights is working fine so it is purely this switch.

If anyone has anymore info I would much appreciate it.

Right - Sussed it.

How come these earlier models have an over complicated mechanism.

Basically, you turn the switch left to turn left. This starts a delay timer. During that timer another mechanism starts heating up to operate the flasher. After the delay timer has cooled down it brakes connection and stops the flasher.

I tweaked the bimetallic strips on the flasher part and I have indicators now although they are a little haphazard on the timing flash but they do flash.

Are there any details on here to modify this to a modern day flasher unit - I could modify the switch so everything looks the same - what 6 volt flashers are available and has anyone done this

If you wanted to change the switch to more modern then you just wire it as per normal switch - feed and surplies left and right and then to a flasher unit onwards. As for flasher unit - does your other 6 volt van have one? or motorcycle unit - but the total wattage of your one tail lamp must equal the 2 on either motorcycle or 6 volt car/van. Maybe motorcycle is best as they use lower wattage lamps...
