So, how exactly are you saving money as when you buy a new king pin it comes with all the new bushes shims top and bottom plugs, just replace the lot. You could always save a few pence by greasing them every 3000 miles instead of 1000 ;)

hi ,
there were a set of new bushes on ebay minus the pin
bro bought them for about £8-00
we used the old pin
we checked its diameter with a digital micrometer
it is exactly the same all along
flew through its mot

Run a bead of weld round the eye in the arm, job done. Cost, less than 5p in gas and wire.

if the pin was still fine, it's more than likely to have been one of those dodgy kingpin sets which were around a while ago.
The internal diameter of the top bush was somewhat 'variable', to the extent that there could be more play in a newly fitted one than one which had been in use for years. :roll:

Moral of the story; always drop the calipers on a kingpin set before starting to fit it...
