Post New rear shoes on drums howling - HELP!
Hi,

Not sure what I am doing wrong. Changed the cylinders and shoes on both sides and they are howling when braking to the point of making the car vibrate and ear pain!

Think i have the shoes in the correct way around (Shorter material to the front). I have tried to centralize them as best as I can but they just seem crap, the front discs are taking a hammering and getting hot even on the commute to work.

Any ideas? Would like them better before Firkin Freezing this weekend

Thanks

Tim

Are you sure your drums aren't oval? I've always put a slight chamfer on the leading edge of the new shoes,it's an old practice to stop the new shoes picking up until the bed in :-)

I've got a similar problem - my rear shoes were done by one of my dad's friends, and now under hard braking the rear end shudders something awful, and under gentle braking the van seems to 'surge' over and over when almost stopped. Not the pedal pulsing, but the van itself if that makes sense?

Sorry to thread hijack, just hoping whatever solution you get is what i need too

re do the adjustment of the lower eccentrics no matter how good you think it is, that's usually the cause. It also works better 2nd time as the shoes have bedded down a bit.
some brakes were notorious for it Ferrodo i think had the worst rep.

I would cut the centering tool a fraction to get a better feel. I think it is too wide. Look at your drums, do they have a lip on the egde? Can you measure the diameter? The shoes need to be very close to the drum to give the higest point for setting your tool. The rear shoes adjuster should not be touched when the drum is pulled off. Maybe the drums need attention too (machining)

Having another go tomorrow. Still suck. Howling when first brake, then woop or chatter, pedal spongey on first press too. Will do more on them tomorrow.... Also brake warning light doesn't light when pressed?

More than likely just a bulb or loose wire. Does it light when you press the 'nub' on top of the resovoir?

pedal spongey on first press too

Please make sure that the wheel cylinder's pistons are in touch all the time with the shoes.
In my case these pistons were retracted back after some 3 minutes of standing still.
The result were spongy first pedal press and wooping.
