I replaced the speedo bulb with a white LED which is fantastic,I also used a pair of flick switches with blue LED in, for my heated rear screen and demist blower, but they are so bloody bright I've put caps on them. I tried tippex but it looked awful might try nail varnish though. :-)

I was thinking something like this, not use the original lamp holders...
(Not sure if they are plastic or metal, though)

I bought those from Joolz's thread, I didn't use the amber or red one, the green is perfect brightness for the indicators, the blue id way to f@r&ing bright for the high beam! the first time I flicked the highs on I though the lord almighty presented himself up ahead to strike me down!

i need to look into a resistor for it...

Exactly the same problem here, I bought a pack of 5 330ohm resistors and added them one at a time to try and dim the LED. With all of them in series (1650ohm) it still hadn't made a difference. I got bored then and just pulled the LED out of the back of the housing, now it only shines a blue glow on the parcel shelf, which is kind of better.

Try painting the led with nail varnish. That tones it down.
