Maybe too much to read but have a look. Thanks to many people on this forum I have a very good setup today. All stuff coming from the UK, both gass and gassless systems

Pure CO2 is cheaper but it has to be the right kind of bottle some let the gas evaporate of from the top of the bottle which is the right one the wrong type of bottle has a tube internally down to the bottom of the bottle and the gas comes out as a liquid and will ice the gauges up.

What would happen if your first project was a cradle to hold the bottle upside down...?

Hi.

A trick question how are you going to hold it upside down whilst welding a cradle to hold it upside down

I do not know.

Erm..... I though CO2 was one of those substances that went from solid to gas without any liquid state?

'Dry Ice' as it's traditionally called, we used to chuck blocks inside non-refridgerated vans to keep frozen food,,,,,,frozen.

At atmospheric pressure. Under pressure, it does.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_dioxide
Quote:
Carbon dioxide has no liquid state at pressures below 5.1 standard atmospheres (520 kPa). At 1 atmosphere (near mean sea level pressure), the gas deposits directly to a solid at temperatures below −78.5 °C (−109.3 °F; 194.7 K) and the solid sublimes directly to a gas above −78.5 °C. In its solid state, carbon dioxide is commonly called dry ice.

Liquid carbon dioxide forms only at pressures above 5.1 atm; the triple point of carbon dioxide is about 518 kPa at −56.6 °C (see phase diagram, above).

Guess it would depend on whether you can get it refilled for a reasonable price...

Here's a UK seller with a similar product, plus some useful information about safety certificates and labelling of bottles ( although there may well be different rules and regulations in France ;) ).

Can u not have it tested & re-certificated? Have to have diving cylinders tested & certificated regularly - not as if CO2 is inflammable or anything...?

Just going back to the one I found on ebay - Would this bottle full of CO2 (new) be OK. It is sold for aquariums but compressed gas is compressed gas - I know it is only CO2 and not an Argon/CO2 mix but those bottle cost over €300 here (I have been to a few places).

I didn't realise how much a pain the gas bottle would be

Cheers
Ian

Ian,
maybe best to sign up on this forum, plenty of good advice freely available...
http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/

For example;
http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/show ... hp?t=13256
&
http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/show ... hp?t=19250
and so on.

For what it's worth, I've used CO2 pub gas for A series bodywork welding with no problems in the past, but with the rapid turnover in managers at the pub next door ( also less frequent visits to that establishment by myself :( ), it's been large bottles of Argoshield for quite a few years.
