Done this today - finally. Set to 7 teeth advance (32*). It's still pinking, probably worse than before. I have 8.5: 1 pistons ... presumably I should be looking at advancing it even more? Problem is I'm not sure I've got that much movement left in the points box!

you sure its right ? 7th tooth when its revved up not when its idling.
If so something else is wrong check for induction leaks, plug heat range float heights state of rubber fuel hose etc etc

I give up, Citroen gave you a nice tool to set proper timing ( 6mm drill in flywheel) but if you don't want to listen, your on your own from here on.................

The original layout is made for petrol 98 octan with lead and because this doesn't exist anymore so you need to adjust the stops is as easy as it can be....

and now I'm going to look for some hotspots....... then I don't need the whole electronic ignition anymore....
yes J.W. 1-2-hotspot

whats so odd to setting the ignition at full advance - like most points fired engines.

how do you know youve adusted the stops correctly and not gone too far or bent one further than the other? its like having a ruler and then just guessing where to cut.

Cheers all. Set to 7th tooth when revved, will check it again tomorrow. Plugs are Roy's Eyquems (I think) and carb is jetted to 105, but it's on a 2cv engine without the Dyane's "supercharger" arrangement. Float height is fine. I suspect I've set the timing slightly off, what with being the first time I've used a strobe and being distracted (as always happens) by passers by talking to me as I worked (ooh, what is it? Is it a Beetle? Are they cheap to run? etc. etc.), which I don't mind as it's nice to be sociable.
I'll have another look at it tomorrow and let you know how it goes ...

Remember that too far advanced will cause pinking.

I remember when we used to call it pinging, I must be getting old.

I even remember distributors having a micrometer type adjuster on the outside for when each fill up resulted in different timing needs.

If I recall correctly it was called a vernier adjustment, some earlier cars and bike had manual lever adjustment of advance and retard for the ignition, usually on magneto systems. I can remember getting a nasty kick back, from such a system on one of my bikes.

I've been seen hobbling round many a car park muttering incantations to the great god of motorcycles know as' Ohh your bast***' The worst I ever got was off my 750 Norton Commando, which was the last of the 750 Combat engines with high lift cams and lovely long reverse one megas.I also had a short kick start which made matters worse. I fitted the longer one after nearly breaking my leg. Pity it didn't do the same to the thieving shit that stole it!!!

I think the worst bike was the Panther 650 single with a manual advance retard lever on the bars.

A few kneecaps were sacrificed on their behalf, as there was no keyswitch it was common for owners to leave it parked on full advance. If you returned to your bike and found a bloke writhing around on the floor with a ruined leg you could put the boot in just to add insult to the injury.

I have a 400cc Enfield Diesel with 18:1 compression that's kick start only....... :o

Love it
When I first bought the Commando I just couldn't start the blooby thing, the chap I got it off was on crutches with a broke leg and he started it for me
