Joolz,
even Einstein knew when to introduce the fudge factor...

You have to go up as high as the International Space station (400 km) before gravitational pull is reduced to 90% of that on the Earth's surface.

I believe that weight does decrease with altitude, although mass will of course remain constant. Not as a result of anything to do with the air, but because weight is dependant on the gravitational pull of the earth, the further you get from the earth the less that pull will be.

Ok then, based on those figures, and assuming the base of the tower is at sea level, then I calculate the reduction in gravitational pull at the top of a 3.6km tower to be 0.114%. As the gravitational pull will vary slightly for every block, for the sake of the calculation, lets say the overall reduction for the whole tower is 0.114 ÷ 2 = 0.057%.

Therefore the tower which we thought would weigh 432kg, will only weigh 431.754kg, a deficit of 246 grams, and equivalent to 213.6 bricks, which would add over 2 meters to the top of the tower.

Whether that would be cancelled out by the ones at the bottom being compressed I'm not sure, who knows youngs modulus for a lego brick? :P

I think a 2 metre tower of lego is significant, you would too if you had it in the living room. Just be thankful I didn't use more than 3 decimal places.

Well, you asked for this, so dig out that calculator...

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)

Density:
1.06 g/cm3

Young's Modulus:
1.90 GPa

Poisson's Ratio:
0.41

I should be back from the pub around 11.30, can't miss out on the chance of celebrating the arrival of George (#1 grandchild, 7lb 14 oz without his little cotton socks. :) )

Oh arse, I was hoping he wouldn't.

I'm going to claim that I don't know the cross sectional area of a lego brick, and although I think there are some around here somewhere, and also a vernier caliper, I don't have any scales with which to identify the type of block weighing 1.152g, on which the calculations are based.

Although as we know the weight, density, and height, we could work out the average cross sectional area. I don't think that would help though as the important cross section is through the walls, the top surface isn't under any pressure.

Oh and congrats on the little people to both of you, and to anyone else to whom it may apply.

Also compression of plastics is hardly linear like that of metals.
Almost tempted to make a project out of this, for the FEM class I attend at my uni ;)

Congratulations Ken and Dave!
