After 223,000 miles the 'box is getting a bit ropey with the syncro on 2nd and 3rd getting tired and causing the gears to snick as I come down the 'box. I'm looking to replace the 2nd/3rd syncro hub, is this it?.........

Rebuild or repair?

Don't expect miracles, the sliding pinion is reproduction.

Out of interest Jon, I think it's worth quantifying 'rebuild/repair.'

Viking repaired my box and seeing what he did, and the level of work involved, I can fully understand why a 'rebuild,' replacing only what is necessary, would cost in excess of €700.

If you're changing the syncro, i'd stick with 'repair' or 'running maintenance!'

Exchange reconditioned gearbox from ECAS £495. Or Rick Pembro will rebuild for less I think.

Cheers guys. I'm really wanting to do as little as possible (mainly due to wanting to keep as much of the mechanicals as original as possible-and also due to costings ). If that item I've linked to ECAS is the thing I'm after, then great. I've already spoken to Peter Cross at Tibberton who has done a fair few rebuilds/repairs over the years, so isn't something that will faze him.

if the gearbox has not been abused ( those 'racing' changes do take their toll on the synchromesh mechanisms ) it might be just the synchromesh clips which are past their best...

Thing is that once the gearbox is apart to replace the clips, it's not that much extra work to replace as many bearings as possible, particularly those on the input shaft and mainshaft as they're not in an oil bath so tend to wear faster than those on the pinion shaft.

Thanks Ken, are all the bearings available? I don't want to do a 'poor' job if it needs doing properly. If something needs replacing, it will be replaced if the part(s) are available. The reason for doing it now is because the clutch has bloody awful judder on take up, so the engine is coming out to see what's going on. I might as well have the 'box looked at, at the same time.
