I am proposing to fit a second fuel tank in my AK350. I have heard of people putting a saloon tank between the chassis rails but having offered one up where it would go in a saloon the neck of the tank fouls on a cross member of the body. It looks like it could go much further back between the rails behind the rear bulk head.

Has anyone fitted a 2nd tank like this? A picture of it in place would be good.

Would it be easier to mount a second van tank in the spare wheel housing and move the spare wheel under the bonnet like the Akadiane.

Mine has a 2CV front end and the spare wheel still fits OK.

Also need to carry two spare wheels {one under bonnet and one in the side}. Big trip into Sahara and Atlas mountains next year.

get one made to fit between rails so it doesnt foul? my dad had a proper racing tank made of ali to fit a kit car, i 'believe' it was quite cheap

I've done it on my Raid AK 400. Wish I never did, had to cut the top rail running on top of the chassis + cutting a hole near the rear lights for the filler neck. You also need 2 one way valves for the fuel line + an extra fuel level indicator on the dash. Connecting the 2 tanks is not easy. Gravity feed will flood the lower tank unless a cut off valve is fitted between the 2 tanks.
I ended up ripping it out and sticking a 20 liter can in the back, no worries.

PS. Seen an Acadiane with a tank fitted on top of the chassis between the 2 crossmembers made in steel. It is connected to the side tank but sealed completely to avoid leaks (gravity feed)

I fitted a second tank to Peta Cater's Acadiane which did Raid Australia in '96, then drove back to the UK overland, albeit taking a year to do so...
It was a standard 20l steel tank, with connection of the two tanks to the engine being via one of these http://www.johnrichardssurplus.co.uk/pr ... tap-526783 mounted so that it was possible to switch between tanks while on the move.
Only one fuel gauge needed, btw, as a 2 way switch on the dash selected either the side tank or the belly tank.

If I was to do something similar nowadays, I'd probably use one of these to transfer the fuel from the belly tank up to the side tank, as the cost of the 2 way fuel tap has increased considerably, whereas the price of electric fuel pumps has gone down...

Im with Viking on this , a couple of 20l Jerrys fit accross the car in the middle, we put ours on side behind the drivers seat of the 2cv. In morrocco you probably wont need it unless you do the Oued Draa or head down to Western Sahara. Jerrys can come out when you need to shed weight and jerrys are a unit of currency in North Africa.
