Post Re: Paris banger ban
Central Paris is already an island for the rich, unfortunately. However, I have a feeling that the French people will have a way of making this plan unworkable.

Seem to remember that there was a proposal recently (or was it a law?) which stated that old cars could not be driven any further than the neighbouring departement of the address to which they were registered. Wasn't that idea rendered unworkable via protest and civil disobedience? If so, I hope the French do the same with this one.

The best way to reduce traffic in a busy city centre? Remove parking places and improve park and ride. I believe that's what they did in Amsterdam. But that wouldn't please the rich, would it?

It was sort of working in Oxford until the council started charging for the park and ride parking as well as the bus. Now they're mostly empty and traffic chaos reigns again.

My brother in law commutes about 10miles in by bike every day now. He used to use the p+r but is quicker by bike and there's no parking allowed at the John Radcliffe.

Hope you're right, but i wouldn't be so sure..if you read the bottom of the telegraph article it says that these count for just 3 or 4% of Parisian motorists and that diesel fumes are really the biggest problem, but as is so often with eu driven crap it's the easy targets that get it.
In some parts of northern italy it was 2 strokes, despite the emission problem being 100s of 1000s of inefficient boilers in use, legislating a few old mopeds and classic vespas and lambretta scooters off the road was easier and ticked the box for some faceless suit somewhere. :(

"The measures require approval at ministerial level and the Paris Préfecture de Police"

That's where it'll fail.

"They are part of a plan to turn Paris into a Low Emission Zone, cutting emissions by 30 per cent by 2015"

They having a giraffe?

"Users of old cars are only thought to account for three per cent of the 4.5 million or so vehicles in the Paris region."

But are therefore accountable for the 30% of emissions that need to be cut? Nah. And the majority of those "old cars" are actually just old geezers who do about 5000miles/french miles a year going to buy the cigs and baguette once a day with their 205s or Axs (Whats the plural of Ax?). The bit we're talking about is the slightly older, what are now considered "classic cars". There'll be too many ministers with Fiat syders or old mercs to let this bit go through. Even if it does, there'll be some form of pass that yes, you'll probably have to buy or pre-book in advance or whatever, but you will still be able to use your 2cv in Paris. Must see about 2 or 3 on average and normally the majority are those tourist things. Granted, there's still a fuck load, but the majority of owners probably keep them tucked up in their underground garages because they don't actually want to take them into the city to get beat up in the first place. I've just realised I'm writing some utter twoddle here, but yeah, simmer down and have a pastis. It won't happen.

And like you say... diesel fumes from wagons... much bigger factor than a few little 602 shit heaps.
