That's because they're broken down on the hard shoulder in a cloud of steam, and waving at them just winds them up

Come on guys, some of them vans are cool.Nope, very cool.I know Twaty Oliver is SUPPOSED to have one,but does he drive it every day?I doubt it.Does he take it to shows ?Nope.Would he get his hands dirty servicing it ? Deffo no.

I don't mind the people who are classic car, oily fingernails people who happen to like VWs - as you say, they're much the same as us only with two more cylinders - it's the ones like those you describe who annoy me. And sadly, many of the VW campers I see seem to be driven by folks like this. Whereas nowadays, most small classics (Morris Minors, Reliants, classic Minis and the like) will respond to a wave from some scruffy bloke in an equally scruffy Dyane, most (though not all) VW bus drivers just content themselves with a glare expressing a sort of bemused disgust. :D

I had a bit of a thing for them, but after a while I was starting to get the whole snobby stuck up there own arses vibe coming off quite a few.
Its all about old cars at the end of the day, I have more respect for someone who gets off their backside and is willing to dive in, willing to ask stupid questions and fuck up trying, than i have for armchair critics who produce fuck all in the name of perfection.
Classic car nuts as a whole are a minority enough without outcasting people over marque elitism.
I do about 95% of my own spannering, always have done, I have owned a Beetle a Baja Two Bays a Splittie and a 71 Fastback over the years.
I have had a lot of fun with them and met some people i am proud to call my friends along the way.
I do not have a Tounge too big for my mouth and a fetish about Rocket Salad, If anything the whole VW iconic thing sort of ruined a good vibe for me.

What we need to remember is something I touched on recently , especially pertinant to those currently doing the old car thing in the UK.
We are a minority, HM Government really does not give two hoots about us bar being a bit of a fly in the ointment for them.
Im all for a bit of banter but the bigger we are as a whole the more difficult we will be to swat when they decide to try and legislate our hobby out of existance.
Do you really think the Pre 60 no MOT thing is just a Gift? Call me cynical but i have a feeling it is a loaded gun they have handed us.
and lets not forget whats going on in the Modified car world right now, Things are going to get awkward real soon.
Talk of legislating down to the makes and size of tyres you are running just aint funny.

Neat trick for an aircooled :)
This time of year most bus owners are probably frozen into a state of abject misery and thats when they lost the animation on their faces

Ah but the new Brazilian ones are / were water cooled. Whatever they're powered with they don't seem to be able to make it down the M4 /5 to Cornwall without dying. Probably, like has been written above, because their owners don't know anything about motors but want to be cool.

The aircooled ones are easy to tell from the watercooled ones.
the watercooled ones are the ones that look like they have crashed into an airconditioning unit These will have steam pouring out of their seriously underpowered engine nicked from a poverty spec Polo.
The Aircooled ones have Cones and Fire Appliances surrounding them due to flames licking up their rear quarters on the hard shoulder :D
Petrol tank above a hot engine connected with a fuel line that has a lifespan similar to a Cranefly...Fantastic idea

Rule of thumb with VWs the more tat on the roofrack and the more Surf/Lifestyle stickers the more likely it will grenade itself on the hard shoulder.

Thanks to DaveB and his brother, I've finally got my Trabant. It makes a 2cv look complicated and with no brakes and no idea how the gears/fuel tap/anything on the dashboard works it made driving the seatbelt-less 425 feel like the safe option.
