Post Buying a BX
Hi, I hope this is not too off-topic for a 2CV forum, but I see that some of you have experience with this model.
I'm seriously considering this one at the moment:
http://otomoto.pl/citroen-bx-14tge-C26168282.html
I know it's all in Polish, I post this link mostly for the pics.
It's a 14TGE which from what I understand means, most importantly, fuel injection and a 5 speed gearbox separate from the engine. The list of new engine/suspension parts in this one is quite impressive, if what the seller states is true. The price is higher then your usual bx over here, so maybe there's some truth to the excellent condition it's supposed to be in, and I have a suspicion the owner is a member of the local Citroen Club Poznan (I mean, c'mon, someone who is maintaining a BX in such a good shape, and supposedly for his mother, MUST be a Citroenhead ;) ).
I've heard they're quite resistant to rust (except from the first ones) due to some nice zinc coatings etc., is that true? How reliable are they and is there anything particularly bad about the 14TGE engine/drivetrain?

What to look out for if and when I go to see it?

Looks nice to me...

check for leaking lhm, put it up and down a few times and look for green oil
check spheres, pump has to click once every 20 seconds when it clicks faster main sphere is gone.
check reararm bearings rearwheels have to be | | and not / \
check window mechanism.
Check for rusty lhm leads....

when injection make a testdrive with only a little throttle and look if it pickup nicely without hickups.

Check drivetrain on wethering rubbers.

Try to bring the price down, (probably nobody wants this car exept you), play poker..... and win....

Check all electrics (heating fan in all positions)

Do I need to continue...

Well maintained these are good cars.....

drive in reverse and break, when you here feel/hear knocking there play in the drivetrain.

check handbrake wires if they are worn.

If you can, go back a second time and look again, if you still like it its good..
First time mostly the waw effect kicks in and you forget to check things
(happens to me all the time)

hi, ive owned 2 petrol and my brother had one a diesel
they,re a great car but always have problems regarding the hydraulics :(
if you buy one, the first thing to do is remove the green container of fluid(easy) and replace all of the fluid
most importanty-clean the filter in the base of the container
the spheres present probs
the hood&tailgate are plastic

I had a '92 TZD 1.7 from 2002 to 2008 ....[1.7 turbo deisel].
I can only add to the above things to look for, except for the fact that the "A" pillars on mine was rusty and the front doors were ready to fall off at the hinges.
The final straw was the fact that the hydraulics were totally fubar'd and needed new spheres & a new "octopus" [which is the nickname for the mass of pipes coming from the hydralic reservoir]
The TZD is [IMHO] the best of BX's .....compared to my present '06 C4 VTR+ coupe [1.6HDi] the BX was just as economical, fast, roomier & more comfortable.
With hindsight ......I sometimes regret scrapping it .....and I had to scrap it,I tried to give it away [for spares] .....and no-one wanted it.

best regards
T.

Injection on a 1.4? News to me.

I know that injection was available on some models but I've never see the base model 1.4 fitted with it.

Usually TGE denotes a trim spec not injection. It will have a 5 speed box and a tiny solex carb. There is a mod you can do to improve performance which is to fit the carb from a AXGT, which gives it some more go.

The BX 14 is great though as there is soooo much room in the engine bay, and you can get to the leaking octopus quite easily. Watch for cooked head gaskets tho. In BX terms the BX14 is a bit 2CV like, and the ultimate is a BX14E which has no toys at all, not even a split fold rear seat. The lowest Spec I managed to have was a BX14 TE St Tropez which was white with green tinted glass and rear sunblinds. I think Italy managed to have an even more basic model called the BX11 but I've never seen one.

Will Waldron is probably the most knowledgeable person I know on the BX (BXnerd) so he can tell you more.

Anyway, someone has paid a deposit for it yesterday (returnable), if she does not sign the contract today I could still buy it, but I have a feeling I should start looking for another one.

I tried to give mine away on here rather than scrap it
http://www.bxclub.co.uk/forum/
no-one wanted it ......[I guess BX's are little rarer now though than in 2008 which was when I had mine,I have'nt seen one "on the road" outside of CCC/2CVGB "circles" for a good while now] ..... :(
btw .....lots of info about them on the above link.
