The future of short-distance motoring?

Nice idea, but I doubt it!

What frustrates me even more is they tell you what they've done, and then just show lots of arguments etc.

Wheeler dealers you actually see edd china doing the work not shouting at people in a pub

I like Ed , He has actually done his time on the spanners, knows his stuff and I can respect that.
Having been privvy to some insider dealings on the programme, it is a crock of made up shite though.
The cars are not what they seem and the buyers are stooges , normally crew members etc. The cars then get quietly sold on for much less money
Years back I was in convoy with Ed on RTTS, Nice bloke who is well into his cars :)

As Citroen rubbished other car companies bringing out 'retro' cars when they launched the DS3, I really can't see them being able to get away with it. I'll believe it when I see it.

I dunno really? what about the concept one that was bandied about in Auto experss a few years back?
That didnt hit the spot for me on a personal level but then again neither did any of the others, save the Fiat 500 to a degree.
The Fiat to me was the closest anyone got back the the original concept.
The Beetle and Mini became something they were not intended to be, the originals were supposed to be Bog standard cheap runabouts with simple mechanics.
The newb versions became something different , neiche cars with but a passing nod to the original.
At least Citroen were honest with the DS3 It had nothing to do with anything, looking forward not back with the odd retrotastic feature as is fashionable.
As for a new 2CV? It has been and gone, and I think most of us largely ignored it when it happened anyway
Pluriel(Sp) anyone? One vehicle with a swaparound roof, its a soft top, its a hard top, smallish engined, quirky,

The only car that's close to a 'new 2cv' is the Tata Nano. I was going to write an article for 2cvgb focussing on the whole idea of a modern 2cv, but to be honest I can't be bothered.

Berlingo mixte is the closest thing Citroen make to a new 2cv, in my mind. (Are they still made?) All these modern remakes - Fiat 500, VW Beetle, Mini, all of them - are icons of style over substance. Any new 2cv will no doubt be designed for wacky doo show offs and have a cute "face", a full length sunroof, some kind of built in corporate approved "character" and some hippy shit graphics plastered all over them, but as we all know, that's not what 2cvs are about. The "new car" thing is symptomatic of a society which values form more than function.

I see what you are saying but for something like a new 2cv to happen and work, they would need to go back to the original design brief to a degree. Im not talking plowed fields and eggs in baskets but .
but
Easily repaired with basic tools and parts, 3 Spanners and a screwdriver should be all you need to get home.

(If there is any truth in the rumor that back in the day 2cv consumables were available from just about every other tobacconists shop in france and that thought is a fantastic one.)
Utilitarian to the degree where nothing unessential is present no bells whistles computers...
.
It need not bear resemblance to anything before it, Clean sheet of paper, off you go guys design something wonderful that works.

Oh and here is the Big one, CHEAP to buy and run.
Otherwise all the rest is null and void.

Thats pretty much what happened with the original

That's how I see it too. A cheap vehicle to mobilise the peasant masses, and as Europe is so rich now we don't have any peasant masses, the market for such a vehicle just doesn't exist especially when you can buy a ten year old jaguar for £1000 if you're lucky, what kind of poor dole scum type is going to go out and buy a new car with wind up windows, flat glass and a wanky two pot engine that sounds like a washing machine full of marbles when it's flat out at 70mph when you can have a massive Luxo-barge for under a quarter of the price. China, India and the growing economic powers in Asia are where cars that require the same design brief as the 2cv will thrive in the current climate. Depression era America had the model T, postwar France had the 2cv, postwar Italy had the 500 and the Vespa, I guess the UK had the Austin seven. The time for 'people's cars' has passed the developed world by now.
