Hi Dave
I have insurance but in France - no help to you (sorry)
Solex do not have frame numbers only engine numbers (under plastic cover on engine). This is what we use to insure and register them

Right then, been doing a bit of tinkering,as you do,and was wondering if this mark on the flywheel is the timing mark?Anyone know?

Also been doing a bit of cleaning, will fit new piston rings when they arrive.

Was amaxed that there are no bearings in the bottom bracket, where the pedal axle runs. Its just metal to metal. So,got the drill out and fitted a grease nipple :) .

If all the parts arrive, should be back on the road for the weekend :P .

Dave. Iirc there is no bearing because the bike isn't meant to be cycled any distance. Purely for starting...?

Hi Dave,
good photos, just a few tips before assembly:
1. Yes that is the timing mark and should line up with rupture mark on the crankcase or maybe 2-3 mm before to alow for the slow burn rate of un-leaded fuel. To set ingnition put flywheel mark about an inch before or left of Rupture mark and place cigarette paper between points the turn flywheel clockwise until points relaese the cig paper, it should be on mark, if not adjust points adjustment screw left or right until paper releases in the correct spot.
2. Piston ring gap should be no more than 3 - 4 thou.
3. Set top and bottom ring gaps same side of piston before assembly and middle ring gap 180 degrees or oposite to top and bottom rings.
4. Inlet port on early Solexes was between 7 and 7.5 and 8 on later 3800 models. drill this out to 8.5mm and will go better and better torque at lower speed. This was Solexes way of restricting power and speed to 30kmh in the 1950's and 60's to keep them within the law?
Geoff,

Hi Geoff,is it the port inside the cylinder,or just the oulet that needs to be bigger.Dont really fancy altering port timing :o.Knowing my luck it will balls everything up.I have opened the exit area on the block and the pipe to the same size as the gasket. They were both alot smaller than the gasket, and the outlet area on the block, compared to the port, was about a third smaller. Now its of a comparable size.
Dave.

Dave, it is the port that runs from the engine pipe into the barrel just drill it straight through, the reason the gasket has a larger hole is that it meant for the later models that had the 8 or 8.5mm ports, I have drilled out all of mine without upsetting anything and it really does make a difference. You probably cant see in my pic,but I have opened the exit hole quite considerably.
I have also seen on Leboncoin an adjustable fuel main jet.Any good?
Dave.
