Daft as its sounds Yes you can.
I build Model Kits and there is this stuff you can buy that is roughly..
Iron Filings,PVA adhesive and saltwater.
Paint on PVA, add Ironfilings ...Paint with saltwater.

or Drive it through an English winter...

Mr Unhinged,
for plastic models try various amber/rust tones then hair spay then grinded salt
and final colour coat. Then you can pick the colour out and reveal the rust. :)

Ive heard about that trick and i May well try it on my next project . :)

The right way to do it is leave it in a california Scrapyard for ages Im talking 20 or so years with the windows open in this case.
Chuck a new engine in, stick it on a boat to England, replace pretty much most of the suspension and brakes, Window seals etc.
Hit it with a Lowering stick, Replace the interior using Ply and the original Termite munched powdery pile of firewood in the back as a template.

and then run out of money selling the thing for much less than the resultant work
