I tend to agree. a regular change of gearbox oil is the cheapest parts youll ever put into the box...

As long as you use a GL4 specification oil, I doubt that there's any need to stick to 80 grade, with 75W90 being my preference.

Also, isn't changing the gear oil at the same intervals as engine oil a bit excessive, since Citroen's 'Maintenance Guide' booklet provided with a new car specified 15,000 mile intervals?
Even if the car is used hard or in an aggressive environment, 10,000 miles or annually seems to work just fine, in my experience...

On the same topic, I don't understand why folk nowadays think that it's necessary to change engine oil and filter at 3,000 miles, when Citroen advised changing the oil at 5,000 miles and the filter at 10,000 miles. :?

There's a 1 litre bottle of GL4 80-90 waiting to go in the car later this evening, hopefully I'll get that in and the clutch adjusted so it doesn't bite right off the floor.

Ben,
I never use the locknut on the clutch cable, but leave the nuts free so that adjusting the free play can be done without tools.
The primary nut is loaded by the clutch fork return spring and as it's bearing on the bulkhead rather than the engine, there's little or no chance of it moving due to vibration...

Some use shit oil gear box and engine, made from banana juice. The lubrication curve begins to drop around 5000 km. If one use quality oil, then yes one can drive longer but why not keep 100% fresh oil by changing often.

Interesting Citroen Denmark suddenly recommended changing from 40.000 to 15.000 km (not miles) gear oil and every 7.500 km engine oil (called small service)

Since oil is dirt cheap I'll not hesitate changing often.

I'd have said gear oil at 3 000 miles is a bit excessive. But if you do change it that frequently, don't buy it in piddling little litre bottles at ten quid a time: buy one of these ... Image

...from here ... http://www.smithandallan.com/prodpage.aspx?id=1861

They're good for engine oil too. And all sorts of other stuff.

 BLIMEY cheers RT you've just saved me a fortune. I change the Van's oil after every trip away, or every 1000miles, whatever comes first. I change the gear oil on the same (now) every second oil change. That Smith and Allan is going to save me a fortune!

I discovered them through the Land Rover Series 2 forum. Land rovers of A Certain Age have a prodigious appetite for fluids of all descriptions.

Im workinhg on a "Total Loss" system for gearboxes where the internals are fed fresh oil constantly....its only oil.

im about 5k between engine oil changes and gearbox yearly - both run semi synth and it comes out looking like 500mile mineral oil

better get the stocks and pillory ready for me

Sean,
would that be a reference to the automotive equivalent of someone who feels the need to changes their undercrackers 10 times a day on the basis that they might just be struck by a bus or a meteorite ?
