Anybody know much about dynamos on old 2cvs? I could do with a workshop manual/RTA with a good exploded diagram of how I take it to bits. The charging light came on while I was driving home from registers day and because I'm an optimist and a lazy bastard I used the car to get to and from work the last couple of days before deciding I'd have a look at it. The brushes are worn down to the rivets and it's started to score the commutator. I'm hoping that new brushes will be a cheap and easy fix but assuming I've made a right old bollocks of it and need to change the commutator as well, is it a fairly easy thing to do?

Im guessing I could run the bastard up and clean any scoring off the comm with emery cloth or something?

I also understand there are two different types, how would I identify which is which and which I have on my car, so I can order new brushes?

It should be stamped somewhere on the body,the name that is.If you want to take the armature off,you may need a puller.I've got one I can send you.
Its not that difficult to strip down,just be gentle as its old .
I stripped the one on the AZ,but never got to reassemble it cause I sold the car.

Is it just fitted on a taper like the fan is?

i think that as long as the commutator isn,t too deeply scored, a new pair of brushes should do the trick-- as long as they make contact mostly
if the commu is totally knackered the armature can be put in a lathe and the commu trued up, if theres enough meat left

Two types of Dynamo, Paris Rhone and Ducellier. My Paris Rhone commutator was badly burned. The Citroen spec says min dia is 51mm, but I had to skim to 49.05mm, and it works OK. Make sure you get the right brushes for the correct type, as (I think Ducillier are thinner than Paris Rhone) - however as a get you home, Ducillier fit Paris R.
It is said that a 3/4 UNF bolt can be used to get the armature off its taper, but Citroen tool is 20mm x 1.5mm pitch
