Had thought about one of those but while I don't mind cutting a hole in the back panel [side of doors] which can be replaced, cutting a hole in the roof is a different matter.

i used 2mm ply and bent it round the van roof before finally screwing it to the roof i shoved some foam sheets down behind the ply. then covered in black felt. as for cab roof i fitted a over head box with stereo in the front and speakers in the roof above your head when sitting the van. but then i am short.

Are you mad, Paul? Seriously? August...? Why...?

(Which bit of the Sahara, Tunisia or Morocco? We spoke to a few people who'd been through Algeria, and had no problems, but said the people were very unfriendly compared to Tunisia. Both Mali and Mauritania are unsafe these days, and Mauri was an utter toilet even when it was safe.)

They use them in the desert

That's a brilliant idea - should be easy enough for Paul to find a dead van roof - then just use some 10mm or so "stand-offs" between the two, and instant Safari Roof.
