Post The 'easy' way to grease knife edges...

Dear Sam,

We all have reed about grease nippled eye/tie bolts that do or don't work pending being greased or not. If like me i like to get my hands dirty, I have been trying to prefect a way to put grease into the area around the knife edge without the need to dismantle it. Yes i do realise that I could take it apart & fit a grease nipple but the hexagon tie bolts are hard to come by ones that are without ware marks on the inside of them . So I bought a sealey needle nose grease dispenser thinking that would do the job but no the needle end is too fat to fit between the housing & the tie bolt. 2 months later when at work I had a Eureka moment!!!!*** If I removed the needle from its housing & placed it on the end of my grease gun tube without the g/gun nozzle and thread it to the same thread on the tube. But first what I did was to remove the small needle opening at the top of the needle with a angle grinder to let more grease out why, " I hear you say" well I fitted a MC Donald's straw to the outside of the needle with gaffer tape. So when I lay under the car I could put the straw between the housing & the tie bolt & squeezed the right amount of grease in so now it is easier to apply grease to the knife edges. And one more idea came to mind when greasing the edges is to stop the grease from leaking out the other side of the tie rod is to cut a CD disc into a small square around the centre hole ( 2cm x2cm square ) then cut a channel half way to the c/hole then coat it in grease & slide it onto the knife edge & rotate so that it won't slide off & there you are, instead of binning a duff CD reuse it. It works great, "so much better than not having enough grease in the tie rod" I gave my car a road test to make sure i couldn't hear it creak as it does sometimes going around corners and it's perfect no sound at all.
.
Yours...

The official Citroen method was to just brush motor oil into the knive edge - I have always made an alteration to this by making a mixture of normal grease let down with motor oil to make a nice semi liquid grease that s much easier to apply onto and around the knife edge using a 1" paintbrush.......

granted, but that can't be as much fun as cutting up a CD and using a Mc Donalds straw...

It's so difficult to pop the r clip off and smear grease into the shackle.

That's a new one to me, any references I've seen in Citroen's workshop manuals about knife edges mention greasing them, never oiling. :?

Oops...can't remember in my beer addled mind where I got that from now....any road up, grease + oil works fine for me, it has kept all my knive edges nice and smooth over 30+ years without failure.....

It seems difficult to succesfully and 'properly' grease such a high load bearing surface.. Reminds me i must do mine soon..!

The grease is there to stop dirt and moisture getting to the bearing surface. It's a knife edge, so it's a rocking motion at the bearing surface and the pressure is so great that grease will be squeezed off of the knife edge.
