 Re: Steering Rack overhaul
Isn't there a special tool for removing the arms and then the bearings?

 Re: Steering Rack overhaul
You can buy a special tool but I've never needed it.

 Re: Steering Rack overhaul
Nice one Simon. Been reading up and am wondering about the pinion bearing... is it wise to replace this and is a special tool needed to remove it?

 Re: Steering Rack overhaul
The pinion bearing is acctually part of the pinion and shaft. It is not replacable on its own.If the seal carrier/nut has two slots in it then you will need the tool to remove/re-fit it.The latest carriers have a nut type head on them,so if you have one of those you can just use a spanner.

 Re: Steering Rack overhaul
Wow! That's a comprehensive overhaul! The pictures are incredibly informative... thanks a lot for the link.
Is the welch plug reusable after it's knocked out btw?
I see that Ecas stock two types of pinion... 7 or 8 teeth. How do you tell which type is fitted to your car?
Mines a 77/78ish formerly 2CV4 and lhd. Does that provide a clue?
I'll have a look at J's pinion locking nut, but judging by age I imagine it'll be the one needing the special tool. So anyone going to registers who might be able to bring one along?

 Re: Steering Rack overhaul
I've got all the tools Aidan.
Don't know if I'll make registers as we'll have the kids that weekend but, I'm sure I can get the tools to you somehow.
