Post A strange thing
I have noticed a strange thing happening on my car.I have been driving it everyday for the last 12months,so I know all its rattles and creaks, but this has me beaten.
It has developed what I would describe as "steering shimmer",or wobble of the steering wheel when I go over a small bump or if the road is un even or rutted. The steering wheel seems to wobble so to speak, and the car seems to do the same.
The strange thing is,it only does this when I have the roof rolled back :o .I have travelled down a certain road with the roof back and it does it,and tonight I went along the same road with the roof closed and it was fine.
Any thoughts?

Those symptoms would sound like worn king pins or track rod ends to me and the fact the roof is open may just be coincidence?

The BB does something similar - its just passed its mot with flying colours but I'm wondering could the front shockers be buggered?

I had the same symptom, except the roof diversion
and it stoped when I changed the very worn track rod ends
and the rubber block.

I suggest to open the track rod end housing and check the balls.
You may be surprised.
Do not rely on the play feel test.

A shimmer after hitting a pothole always points to track rod end balls in my experience.

I agree with you all,and will double check the ball ends, but,as I said,it only does it when the roof is open. When its closed, the car is 100% perfect :?

I found this out the hard way in my first 2CV. Not a pleasant experience! The funny thing, Dave, was that the problem did not necessarily occur every time... so there was me trying to work out what was happening, checking this, tightening that, until one day the track rod broke off at 60mph when I went over a bump. An alarming experience, to say the least, and one that could have been a lot worse!

take the track rod end housing apart with the special tool, mine were totally knackered /dry and one cup was broken in half with its other half missing! the arm ball ends were worn beyond recognition
it wasn,t mentioned in the mot whilst like this!!
