Hay-on-Wye, yesterday. Staggered out of a pub, to be confronted by a French bloke, asking directions. He and his mates were driving these:

Love Hay-on-Wye, spent a lot of my childhood there as my mother is from Hay and we used to visit my grandparents, aunt and uncle. :)

It's a great little place. Loads of reasonable b&bs, too. (Looks as if the castle is going to get done up, finally, now that that rich American has bought it. We'll see.) Had a good weekend there, drinking in the pubs and generally having a lively time - although it was bloody cold and wet!!

Just remembered that while I was trying to give directions and say "I have a 2CV of my own and a van that's in bits" in drunken French, someone walked past and said that he'd seen a load of similar cars that day, and reckoned there was some gathering going on. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Kilvert's is a good pub. The Blue Boar used to be the boozer of choice in Hay, but Kilvert's is better these days. I was there a few weeks ago. I avoid it during festival time though: the prospect of goint there when it's full of Guardian reading amateur philosopher Londoners puts me off my food.
