 When to replace brake disks?
How do you know when to replace them? I guess the obvious answer is 'when braking performance is poor' however I have no comparison. The disks have done at least 60,000 miles (they haven't been changed in my ownership) and there is a noticeable groove in the disk where the pads grip it. She does, however stop fine and received no advisories on it at the last MoT.
Advice/thoughts appreciated.

Re: When to replace brake disks?
Most manufacturers specify a minimum thickness for brake discs. I'd follow that advice.
Just checked. 4mm. minimum thickness. 0.2mm. run-out.

Re: When to replace brake disks?
The risk is cracking the disc. Seen it a few times, one flying disc removed the caliper from the gear box and became a very expensive repair. Also the risk of loosing all brakes is scary. Replace when the micrometer is reading 4.5 mm

Re: When to replace brake disks?
Blimey - I guess being the recommended min thickness it will be safe, but 4mm strikes me as being scarily thin

Re: When to replace brake disks?
The discs on my 2CV have done at least 143,000 miles and there's not much wear (though a previous set of pads lasted over 60,000 and were only replaced due to becoming glazed by age ).

Re: When to replace brake disks?
but your car has been in almost constant use?
a car thats been sat up for a while often has glazed rust as the brake surface - ive always found chipping this off and sanding back never gave long lasting results a n.ew set of disks at £35 and you have a good pedal from the word go and a fighting chance of a working handbrake.

Re: When to replace brake disks?
Viking, 6 sets of discs here, supposedly from 2 different manufacturers, but all stamped with minimum thickness of 6.3mm. If you compare that with Citroen's recommendation of 4mm minimum, that's the service life reduced by a factor of 4. Cheeky beggars... Cracking is most commonly associated with overheating, but quenching hot discs with (or in) water is a short cut to disaster. ken 2CViking wrote: Devils Advocate wrote: Blimey - I guess being the recommended min thickness it will be safe, but 4mm strikes me as being scarily thin That is Citroens minimum.
