 Excessive smoke on startup I've always had the occasional puff of dusty smokey oily shit on some cold starts, but now its almost like clockwork... First start up of the day and an embarrassing cloud appears. Its more noticeable than its ever been. What is it then? Valve stem seals? Rings? It had new oil last week and its only started since then really?

Re: Excessive smoke on startup My experience has been that new rings tend to cure this - vs seals are fairly robust on a 2CV engine....

Re: Excessive smoke on startup LOL. Cheers anyway I kinda know what it'll be but don't know why the sudden change from it being a seldom occurence to every cold start.

Re: Excessive smoke on startup My Dyane does this too. I think I'm not talking too much crap saying that it's pretty common for boxer engines. Gravity lets the oil seep past the rings into the piston which is 'downhill' while the engine's standing overnight, and then gets burnt in a puff of smoke when you first start it. I'm sure Sean was saying a while ago that he reckons it gets more frequent when the rings rotate so all 3 gaps are in line at the bottom of the piston. I wouldn't worry about it, and I suspect it's such a small amount of oil being burnt that it will take quite a while before you notice any change in the oil level. Could of course be valve stem seals as well, as James probably said.

If it still starts ok, isn't down on power, using too much oil or smokes while driving I wouldn't worry about it for now.

Re: Excessive smoke on startup James, if it's the piston rings it might just go away.
The gaps in the rings are set at 120 degree intervals when you install them. They do however rotate so occasionally, the gaps in the 3 rings will line up allowing oil past.
However, just as they moved around to line up, they will then rotate around and not line up meaning the oil can't get through.
I vastly improved Hetty's smoking by taking the pistons out, re-aligning the rings and putting them back in!
Also, use thick oil. Both cars smoke less on on 20/50 than on 10/40.
