Every time I put my foot on the brake pedal my back drums vibrate making an all mighty racket that not only annoys me but causes small children to cry, which i don't mind making kids cry but parents are not too pleased about it.

So i was wondering if any clever clog has had this problem and knows how to resolve it.
Iv already taken my rear drums off sanded the inside of the drum to take any surface rust off, plus given the pads a sand to even them and get any grit out. which made not effect as they still hum!

iv only been told a few things to try which is:

1. swap the drums over (which i think wont make any difference as they both hum)
2. purchase new drums or pads (even tho pads have loads of grip and drums seem fine)
3. weld a nail from the drum to the arm (now iv heard of this before but not sure if it works)

Plus heres a pic of my passenger side drum so any eagle eyed 2cver can point something out wrong if there is.

When I cut the nail off of my rear arms they started to make a racket. Probably the easiest and fastest thing to try.

Adjust the shoes properly with the hexectrics at the bottom-and get some grease on them during assembly. You have the shoes on the right way round
Cutting a slight chamfer on the leading edge of the material may help too

Its often a case of poor adjustment and aftermarket friction material

As Sean say, incorrect centering is the likely reason. Also the wheel nuts are often tigthen beyond 4-5 kg pulling the drum out of shape. Small trick of the trade, 1 kg per nut to begin with then do them all 4 -5 kg.

I had a similar problem with the rear brakes on my sons 2cv. A year ago for its mot we put new linings and wheel cylinders in the rear although brilliant they used to make a terrible noise even though we centered them the same way we had done for years .. now we trawl then net looking for bargins and the shoes came from ebay over the following year we swopped drums over and even swopped the shoes for another brand again off the net ,we welded studs to the outer edges of the drum from the axle still we had the noise it passed this years mot with no problem but the tester remarked on the noisey brakes and suggested blowing out the dust (the brake efficiency was fine) now we wanted to sell the car so decided to have another go at them so we cut out a section of metal from an old drum we had tried in the past to make sure the shoes were centered as close/square as possible and still we had the ##### noise so then we decided to fit new shoes from a yorkshire supplier .. ah peace and quiet at last

looking like new shoes and probably drums then, but with no income it shall have to wait!

try adjusting the hexes again and file a chamfer on the leading edges - its free what have you got to loose? half a day? some knuckle skin? if it still howls then start saving
