Sean, holes do add strength, if you look at the superstructure of any WW2 aircraft the ribs are full of them. Look at the iron bridge in Telford, it's a semi-circle underneath because holes add strength.

Holes don't add strength, they take off weight, without reducing strength..... but only in compression, in much the same way an Arch works!

I want some swaged holes, they look all proper, not like some bellend took a hole saw to a piece of metal...

That's what I meant but Jack Daniels interrupted me when I was reasoning. In the same way a shorter stick is harder to snap, a 'hole' is as strong as a non - hole, therefore smarter technology.

In fact, you've got me pondering now, and I think that (an arch) is, when supporting weight a semi circle, and thus stronger than a flat plane, so why isn't a hole - which is two semi circles simply stronger in both directions?

Russ - I would dearly love to know more about your ability to now have a "swaged hole"....too many times have I had to walk away in the middle of the night realising what a gash I had left....the walk of shame...

Hi John. Y'know what? I've realised - or found, something that is an irrefutable truth. The most interesting conversations are held amongst 2CV owners! I'm serious about that. I have looked at quite a few 'enthusiast' forums for all kinds of stuff, but the most open minded and interesting discourse comes from right here.

I don't know why that is, and I'm sure it's not the metal, but perhaps a car that itself was off the wall attracts individuals that are too? and with them springs a host of diverse opinions.

Believe me I've been on sites that are like I imagine life in Stalinist Russia would have been. You guys have, by either luck or design got it just right.

Holes only lighten a structure, as long as the remaining material has the required strength for its' intended use.
