Do what I'm doing. Sell your A series and buy an elderly diesel Land Rover. That should be cheaper.

Only because successive British governments take everything out of Brussels and implements it with zeal. They (the British government) should act in the same way as successive French governments have.....Pick and choose what is best for the nation/people.

And before people start replying by stating that France uses ethanol in it fuel, I know that already, but I'm am generalizing and not being specific. :)

I think its more the fact that France just has more balls than everyone else and doesn't give one. Like blowing up that hippy barge in the Pacific....

Good article Roy.
In my post Id originally added that draining the float bowl (by the 12mm plug) and draining off the fuel pump before laying it up for the winter, but I took it out as I thought it was just me being a bit paranoid about the furring. But it seems that the corrosive properties of the moisture in the methanol and ethanol and the resulting salts may be the cause of the recent tendancy of the fuel pumps to fail.
From observation of the effects of wet methanol on brass and aluminium* it was always the aluminium that suffered and ive never witnessed any major degradation of the brass element. The only effect was when the fuel fully evaporated off and the wet residues- presumably the water element caused corrosion/tarnishing sticky verdigris.

*in a past life we used Trangia camping stoves with an aluminium frame & pan set, a brass burner unit and fuelled by methanol with 10% water to produce a hotter flame and no sooting

When these units were stored with residual fuel in the burner where the brass burner was in contact with the ally pan there would be severe pitting sometimes rendering the kettle or pan useless in a matter of a month or so. there may have been an element of the residual detergent from washing up liquid helping with the salts and ionic surfactants being particularly troublesome with aluminium.

I may also have to review my rather dogmatic view on vapur locks when global warming and the increase to E10

No idea if this information is correct, but if it is, the regional variations are interesting...

From this site, http://www.kettleclinick.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1375

BP Ethanol added at 5% to unleaded petrol at all sites across the UK. BP Ultimate (super unleaded) does not have Ethanol added, except in the South West of England.
Esso Ethanol is added at 5% to unleaded petrol at most sites in the UK. Esso Super Unleaded petrol does not contain Ethanol, except in the South West of England (Devon & Cornwall)
Shell has repeatedly refused to answer the question. It is therefore an assumption only, that all Shell petrol should be considered to contain 5% Ethanol.
Texaco Ethanol is added at 5% to unleaded petrol. Texaco Super Unleaded petrol does not contain Ethanol.
Total Ethanol is not added to any Total fuel (including standard unleaded petrol). Except in the North West and South East of England.

ken
( Put £45 of Total cooking grade unleaded in the old Dyane today, filling up the 'reserve' tank as well as the main. ;) )
