I've just started a rebuild of my 2cv which has been off the road for a number of years. It's in various boxes so in the coming months (years!) I expect I'll be appearing here alot for help and guidance.
I was fortunate enough to have bought the car some 15 years ago with only 24k on the clock (it now has 90k) and it had been garaged. There were the first signs of rust in the chassis. I had the money at the time so I had it re- chassied. I then stripped the wings off every 2 years, cleaned the hard to get too areas and waxoyled wherever I could.
Consequently, after taking the body off I was pleasantly surprised to find the only rot (so far) in one rear seat belt mount,and that was very localised.

I remember not long before I layed the car up a king pin worked its way up through the top welch plug and fouled the drive shaft. I've read that you can get oversized king pins but the arm has to be reamed out. I live in France, there doesn't seem to be small engineering firms who could do such work in my area (plus everything is expensive and I'm now on a fixed income). However, I have some spare arms (3) 1 came from another saloon and 2 from an AKS400. I can't see any obvious differences (other then L/H, R/H) Now the question,(Sorry for the long winded intro) Will the 400 arm fit a saloon and if not how can I identify a 400 arm from a saloon arm?

Steve,
the principal difference is the location of the knife edge mounting, which is closer to the axle on a 400 front arm.
Fitting a standard arm on one side and a 400 arm on the other will result in noticeably softer front suspension on the side with the 400 arm.

There are other differences, such as the heavier duty droop stop bracket and larger wheel bearings on the 400 hubs, but these do not affect how the car handles.

Ken,
Thanks very much for the quick reply. I layed all three arms together and noticed that the 2 which I thought had come from a 400 had a reinforced bracket on the bump stop although I didn't identify the knife edge bracket distance.
Just in the midst of fitting and the rain started :evil:
