There's no le Sam, I've seen this happen a few times with Iskra alternators, one fellow managed to break one of the brushes when installing a replacement set, then spent half a day chasing round everything else in the charging system on the basis that there couldn't be anything wrong with the alternator.  It might be an idea to remove an Iskra alternator from the car when fitting a new brush set, to reduce the chances of having the one or even both of the brushes sitting at an angle... @250, there is a gap between the slip rings, which is why that brush wore as it did. ken

sam was on his way fine again after a bit of charge in to battery and a coffee
i had to push start him at the petrol station whilst towing my old chassis, quite difficult to push a 2cv with a trailer on !!

what alternator is in the car ?
if its a Ducellier or the other one with the internal fuse pop the black cover off and have a look to see if one of the tracks has gone
