Post Speedo has completely died....
Hey guys,

Recently my fuse box was playing up - bad connections and such - and my fuel gauge flickered on and off. Then i fixed it - cleaned the terminals and vaselined it all - but now the Speedo wont work at all. I believe i have checked all the connections on the back of the dash, but its quite a faff back there so i might have missed some! Anyone know if there may be a bad earth or something???

Also without the speedo my mile-ometer has stopped ....

Cheers

Jack

Are you saying that it's not registering speed or miles? In which case I'd check that the cable is in the back of the speedo properly.

Other than that - it's probably a fuse if all the electrics aren't working?

Its not reading speed or miles at all. As far as i can tell the cable seems to be in the back okay, but without removing more wires to get at it i dont want to risk pulling the dash out further than it wants to go!

Oh and all the electrics are working, none of the fuses are faulty at all.

If the speed and miles aren't registering then the gearbox isn't talking to the speedo, the only link between them is a cable. You can check that it's still in the gearbox end by making sure the cable is fully home and the long bolt is still in. If that all looks ok then you're best off taking the dash out and making sure the cable is attached to the speedo head, if it is fine the cable may have broken internally.

Well i have checked both ends and can find no fault :( Both connections seem to be secure. Ahhh well it surely can be THAT illegal to drive around like it for a while :P hahaha

If you have sat-nav then there's no problem, you can see from that what speed you're going.

It's not illegal to have no speedo.

If both ends are secure, then you've got three possible problems

1) drive from gearbox to cable has broken
2) cable has snapped
3) drive in the speedo unit itself has broken

If you've recently had the dash out, I'm more inclined to think that the cable isn't pushed in correctly. I'm only saying this from personal experience, not doubting you...

Fitted a replacement speedo cable last year that didn't sit into the back of the speedo far enough or the taper on the end of the square was wrong either way it all seemed to fit fine when you took it apart and looked at it, But the needle would randomly drop and not work then maybe a day or two later work again took it apart a number of times couldn't work out what was up it puzzled me a bit then fitted a good used cable and its been fine ever since. Afterwards I fitted the faulty cable to a spare speedo and turned cable by hand and could feel it jump if it wasnt pushed inwards enough.

Thanks for all the help guys, had time this morning to play with the speedo cable itself, called up the 2cv Workshop based in Callington, Devon and he gave me some useful advice, tried running the car with the cable showing.... no response. Then gave the cable a pull, pulled about 50cm out, i think theres about 25cms left in there, hahaha. Time to order a new cable me thinks

Just the mission to get through to someone in all the shops now :( hahaha
