 Heater hose
I now believe there is a God. Tonight travelling to collect my wife from work in the D*lly I began to have trouble selecting top gear. As I sat in the traffic I kept trying to find it but eventually there was absolutely nothing. Ist, 2nd and 3rd were OK so I said nothing when she arrived, as the recent purchase of the car has led to more than a little acrimony, and we returned home with me bubbling with unusual interest in her day and laughing and joking like an idiot to smother the sound of the screaming engine in third. Well I've just been outside for a quiet investigation and found my hurriedly replaced heater hose was baulking top gear. No way would it select so I pulled it off and all is fine again. 4 gears present and correct. Thank you sir

 Re: Heater hose
Improperly fitted heater hoses have been known to drop on the manifold and ignite; that causes acrimony as well as acrid smoke.

 Re: Heater hose
To prevent fire you can wrap the hoses in aluminum tubing thats often used for extractor hoods in a kitchen: And it looks cool too!!

 Re: Heater hose
Yes. Something to do with logs wasn't it? What about heater hoses though?

 Re: Heater hose
Think it was something to do with a baked bean tin-Removing both ends and securing it with a screw to the heat exchanger and slotting the tubing over it.

 Re: Heater hose
No baked bean tins here. Always been paranoid about them hoses since my mates Dyane nearly went up in flames twenty odd years ago.

Knew it involved screwing.
