and Sam once the motorcycle brethren have finished with you (cause you made the road all slippy- and veg oil is worse than mineral oil in that respect) You could ask if any of them had copies of "practical motorcyclist" from the 1920s where there was an article extoling the view that if you packed the front drum with grease it would stop the terrible juddering of the front brake!

Then you could disprove Kens theory that lubricating a friction material is BAD!*
( i may be wrong but dont think they used cork as a lining for front brakes? Which, when used as a friction material in multi plate clutches ran in an oil bath in the primary chain case :? )
;)

Sam,
best keep away from any areas of posh new block paving for a while, if you've put half a litre of oil in each canister...

Also watch out for MOT testers telling you that your "dampers" are leaking.
 That happened to me.Posh new drive, new 2cv parked proudly on it,oil pissing out on to the drive.A nightmare to remove,Asda finest .Wife was not pleased

Hi Sean,
the keyword has to be 'multiplate'.

Compare the coefficients of friction for the various mixes of materials, the differences between their *'wet' and 'dry' coefficients of friction* and the maximum permissible temperature & pressure... ;)

*( For cork, the reduction factor is about 2, for asbestos type materials it's closer to 4, so generally not a good plan to lubricate your brakes or your 'dry' clutch. )*

Full story, with colour glossies, here.

anyway the state of the internals of any can Ive cut open there certainly wasn't any dampening happening friction lining on the cups or not!

was it not that the greenish lining on the can internals was a caster oil based coating ( it certainly isnt just normal paint) and so the caster oil recommendation became enshrined

Wouldn't be surprised if the green goop had some booster in it, but there is also an instruction in the workshop manual about immersing the compression cups in castor oil for x amount of time before fitting.
