right ive done the heads on one side, as i cant get the car out the garage for half an hour or so, but they werent to the correct torque settings..
i did them to 18 ft lb's on my nice torque rench (which wasnt 2.5nm :S )
i took some pictures

Image

the rust

so i undid the head nuts and re did them up in the order

Image

fired up the engine and the engine sounds fine, but ill take it for a blast later
but before that ill do the other side

incidently whats the technique to get a stuck fan off, normally i put the 14mm socket on the end of the extension bar and sharply it at 4 different angles (going in 90 degree varients) and normally pops off... not today

Don't forget that torquing the cylinder head nuts and setting the valve clearances should be carried out with the engine cold.
Once you've started the engine, you may need to wait about an hour for it to be 'cold' again.

ken.

( p.s. My guess regarding that rust staining on the rocker pedestals is that the cylinder heads may have been replaced and the pair which were used had been poorly stored. )

Are you sure that's rust and not yellow paint?

yup in decent light does look more like a paint check mark- especially given its a late one low mileage and relativley clean.

still re torqued head nuts hasnt harmed anything

@James yes backing off by about a turn is all thats needed

Defiantly not paint
Never noticed it before
And ken yes always do it cold
Sam visited this evening. He had the compression tester. Rhs was 175 and lhs was 180. Pretty good. This was done after doing head torquing and valve clearances being set
I took a pic of the other head. I'll go on the pc now and upload it

^^ LHS, rust staining is slightly different
now im on the computer i can word a comprehesible reply

So i torqued the heads up to 18 ft lb, succesfully, using my expensive torque wrench i bought because, well for no reason, well I have used it now!

whilst changing the oil, thought i may as well do the timing, seeing as i'd replaced the points and condenser about 500 miles ago, seemed to be a bit out which was odd, but may be the points wearing in on the cam?? the points gap was absolutly spot on, which was cool, but timing is done again,

i must change the gear box oil, its one thing ive negleted to do,

Sam took the car for a spin whilst he was over and said it drove nicely, I'm not going to bother with new barrels and pistons, as the compression is good, dont see the point, but i am going to bother with a new flywheel, heaby style, so one weekend Sam is going to help me do it,

In other news, my new seats should be done soon, ive put them on hold until the chassis is done as i dont want nice new seats hanging around getting grotty, but after that im having a bit of a clear out,
I managed to off load some useful bits onto sam which he wanted, which where useful but didnt really need them!

Im going to stick to my 3K service routine, its easy and quick enough to service an a series, and my theory is high maintenence, low repair, (in theory)

as you can see in the photos though ive used chinese tubs to catch the oil out of the rocker covers, these are ideal, and for removing the oil filter to catch the oil that comes out of that!!

oh and also after torquing the heads, the valve clearences where differeng (infact most of them didnt have a clearence) but there is still play in the valve guide thingy majigy

im going to try and keep a up to date record on this thread of the car, now ive got photo bucket on my phone its less of a bore to do,
