Well, I did an oil change and rappers this evening. Whilst I was there checkEd the oil pressure switch was working. I did this by being a total twat and forgetting to put the oil filter on before firing it up. So put oil filter on ad after 5 secs of running the light went out.
Anyway going to order the fiddly bits and bobs I need for when I do the chassis, and also stock up on 'service items' such as oil filters and points ad condensers.
I meant to do the points and timing this evening but I was summoned upon by darkness
Incidentally. In one rocker arm (correct word?? Pushes valve open and shut) there is a bit of play, and also on the top of the heads both sides on toward the rear, on the flat surface about 10mm wide there is rust staining. Same place. Both sides. Any ideas??

re Rust staining

need pictures as not sure which bit you are on about

heads are ally so don't rust - could be where the tinware is rubbing but could also be evidence of blowing head joint.

I took a pic. But it was dark
I'll get on the pc tomorrow and find a picture of a headband draw an arrow on it in paint
It's on exactly the same place both sides

Neil, I hadn't forgotten but if you look at the photo I took of the head you'll see light wasn't great. Incidentally I did look. The number I used Was on the plate iirc but I'll check I'm not being a plank

right just got over the epileptic fit brought on by your facebucket background...

thats the rocker shaft post the rust staining may be from a loose rocker shaft

the 12mm nut is the cylinder head nut as well as the rocker shaft location, see your haynes about torquing.

there should also be a brass washer underneath the nut to stop the hardened nut galling on the shaft and sealing against leaks

if that nut is loose you will be loosing power because the heads will be leaking, is the car down on power? does it have a sort of sweet exhaust smell in the cab when working hard? is it more clattery than other 2cvs?

its difficult to see what else it could be due to the poor quality of the pic....but some things not right, you can expect to see brown staining or varnishing from the combustion components condensing in the heads ...and dirt from lack of oil changes but it shouldn't look dry and rusty just brown and very oily.

Hmm, I need to find my Haynes manual. And consult it.
Compared with otter 2cv's it is noticeably alot slower, so probably is down on power
I've never noticed the brown staining there before. But it's identical on both heads
I'll torque the heads Down some point. Probably Tomorow
