Looking back, a nut splitter to get the nuts off the exhaust manifold studs would have been an absolute lifesaver. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-PCE-BROKEN- ... 302wt_1199Whilst working on a budget has always made me go for avoiding more tools or costs, that would have been just over five quid to save a huge amount of blagging time for milling gear to replace the studs after they sheared off flush with the cylinder head flange.

Why? A Car with a broken chassis doesn't need new barrels pistons or vent flap. Jameswallace wrote: true right ive played some gta 4 and driven into lots of things
moving forward so ive worked today to earn the money from my parents to get a new vent flap, thats sorted, one with a seal already crimped, make it actually work! whilst ive got the vent flap out, im going to over hall the wipers, it didnt become apparent just how much play the spindles have in them, its un real! so im going to order some after pay day, and then probably renew the linkage too so that would get a few problems out the way in the coming weeks, im going to study the haines manual, and try and work out how to fit new barrels and pistons, my only question would be that do i need to get the heads shaved after removing them? ive got no idea how to fit the new barrel and piston set, i geuss the manifold nuts will cause me some grief, they look rusted solid, although i recon theyll budge... on my spare engine, the manifold nuts came off a breeze, so ive got a back up plan if it all goes wrong! which luck at the moment, it probably will.. so any tips, are welcomed, oh my other only question, what do i do if the studs shear off? drill and re tap? (if my spare heads are useless?)

Again james - try one problem at a time! Personally I rekon your chassis will be good till the spring. If you want to play with pistons and barrels I'm taking Hetty's out on Sunday. Come round and play.

 Re: 1988 2cv D*lly bits and bobs
I'd like to come and play Sam but I'm working on Sunday as per usual!! Only thing is Sam you havent seen the amount of flex in the chassis! It's not brilliant! I'm trying to deal with one problem at a time, vent flap will be sorted by the end of the week As for barrels and pistons Its not a problem, ther engine is working fine, but I currently have the interest free loan to play with, so I may as well use this while I can! It's something I've wanted to do for a while, and if I dont do it soon, I'll probably never do it Do the heads bead shaving???? Im going to do this late September, if I have any problems I'll nick the heads off the spare engine I have I've bought a nut splitter. Not persificcly for this job, I'll use it for other things too Sean I'd use a sharp chisel, if I owned one

 Re: 1988 2cv D*lly bits and bobs
James, what mileage has your engine done? Mine did 205 thousand and was still working reasonably fine (think Spanners would argue with that statement mind The reason for replacing it with another engine was because it had to come out for a clutch change and I was offered a spare engine whilst I save up some spare cash and Spanners can find the time to work on it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!! PS:- The spare cash you have from the loan can be spent getting yourself and the 2CV to Spa in October (That'll help to relight the fire of enthusiasm)

Don't dick about with it then. The best way to do jobs is to get them done when they need doing. Buy a set of barrels and pistons while you've got the money by all means, but there's no sense changing the old ones if there's nowt wrong with them.

I'm after the slight increase in power ,! I agree it ain't broke why fix it, but if the opportunity is thereb grab it! Its an improvement not a repair. If no one moved forward and waited for things to go wrong we'd still be scratching our arses in caves!

 Re: 1988 2cv D*lly bits and bobs
I absolutely, unconditionally and unreservedly guarantee you won't notice a difference in power. It's worth upgrading knackered old 8.5:1 pistons with 9:1 pistons, I agree. But if your 8.5:1 pistons are not knackered, wait until they are before changing them.
