 Re: Engine Compression
all depends upon how far advanced you set your timing point!! Be it with points or 123 if to far advanced then it will pink going up hills!

 Re: Engine Compression
Nor do my points set them at Salbris before we left to come home, and almost a month later all still appears the same!!
However would much prefer a 123 system then can set & forget!!

Yes, but 123 doesn't go out of adjustment every 200 miles does it? This is baffling. I've had the same set of points on the Ami since I bought it a year ago. Admittedly, I've only been using it since about February, but it's been my more or less everyday car and has done about 4000 miles, including a 1000 mile round trip to Northumberland at full chat all the way there and back. It doesn't pink and I've never had to adjust the points. What are you doing that you need to adjust them every 200 miles?

I'm not getting 123 in a hope of solving the pinking, or because I think its better than points, cos as soon as it starts I try and sort it out asap, its just this engine seems to eat points. Literally. Going to reg day... timing perfect before I set off... On the way there 200 miles later... tinkle tinkle tinkle. It might be that your advance weights are worn. I usually check them when I'm doing the points on an engine for the first time. They do wear and new ones (under £30 from the usual place) make a big difference.

 Re: Engine Compression
i feel a RT how to change the advance weight topic coming on!
i seem to get through points like no tomorow, there is always a lump where its arc'ed (have i described it well enough? probably not!) that aside i need to check timing, as ive recently changed the points and condesner

That car had the same set of points from 2007 to just after giel which did tens of thousands of miles, no problems at all, and I only changed them because I had a spare set handy! Oddly enough, my red car had a new set when it went on the road and it'd fucked them up down to the metal in a couple of months, it's been fine since then though, the set I fitted haven't worn at all.

 Re: Engine Compression
James, I hope you're going to check the maximum advance with a strobe as and when you fit 123... Had a call from a specialist in Manchester today who was fitting one and when he checked the maximum advance, it was about 50 degrees. He tried another new one and it was exactly the same, so he had to resort to fitting a s/h unit, which gave the required 33 degrees. @ Rhythm Thief. I don't think that new advance weights will make any difference to the rate at which electrical erosion of a set of points occurs. That's more likely to be affected by a substandard condenser or charging system voltage being too high. ken.
