Ive re fiberglassed many boats, it itches like a bitch, but is amazingly easy to deal with! I once did a patch about 75cm X75cm. Huge. Anyway personally i fibd fiber glass easy.

I agree that they're probably not any lighter if they're well made.

From working with grp on boats my concern woud be star cracking and bruising; a steel panel would probably ship rather than 'star.'

I think its much easier to work with grp (for those of us that don't weld)

In a previous life I did a bit of welding, and to be honest, I'm inclined to agree that fibreglass is much easier. I wagged up a hole in a sill in 2mins the other night and didn't burn myself or blind myself once. I'm a convert, filler and fibreglass is the way forward. It forms to contours without the need for cnc brake presses, box pan folders, hammers, wollies, and all that guff, and never goes rusty.

I bought a pair of fibre rear wings for the cross car in France, they are about half the wieght of a steel wing, but are less forgiving should you clout them on something

I sorted my bonnet hinge with epoxy and fiberglasss matting. After I'd ground out the rust the biggest 'hole' was only about 5mm which I didn't think was worth having welded. If - in the future- the hole lot needs replacing, so be it. But for now the grp looks fine, wont rust and cost me nothing.

You cant beat working in metal. cutting, bending, shaping, making something thats real.

Fibreglass is for boats not cars.

Oh yes and the smell of an angle grinder in the morning

how much would you say a pair of front wings in reasonable condition without repeaters in, and in need of a small amount of tlc, are worth??

£50 for the pair?

Looks like Bob is back in business:

Hi Neil
I've always intended to produce the panels and hoped to do so straight away but a bit of red tape has delayed things until the 1st of May. I am now registered to trade and production will start very shortly as you guys have found me on google and I already have a few orders coming in.
Many thanks for your interest and if you could pass the word it would be much appreciated
Cheers
Bob

Post Re: Fiberglass panels
So I've just got a letter from the council saying there going to rent me a garage for a pittance. Which is good news. I now intend to make some panels now I have the space.
I firstly need to know what people want, and then I will of course need a panel to mould off
The only risk is that the panels lent to me could be damaged, unlikely, but it is still possible, so would need to be 'given' and will be returned afterwards.
As with regards to damage, if I end up laminating an extra layer to your wing because the mould release agent didn't work then sorry!!!

So ideally I need panels and requests. Then I will get this going when I get the garage in a few weeks

I could do carbon fibre too, but the cloth is about £25/metre which is horrific
I intend to make them out of a woven fibreglass cloth, it's not quite as strong as chop strand, but nicer by far.... And easier to work with
I will do a dummy run with the brand new 2cv rear wing I have in the garage, to see how it goes. I'll make it, fit it to the car and then do some bad parking to see how strong it is. Or I'll just hit it with a hammer

As with regards to same ealier comment with star crazing, it's not the fibreglass that gets star crazing, it is the gel coat on boats. If it was the fibreglass crazing on the boat (un common) then you have serious problems...

The only thing I'm un certain about is, do I gel coat them, or do I leave them unfinished
As for cost of them, no idea. I need to work it out. I won't be doing it to make money,
I'll be doing it to keep cars on the road. I will of course need to clearly cover my costs, and a tiny bit more for my time but not much.

I can't decide weather to make them to order, and have the hassle of taking money and shipping, or I'll speak to a supplier and see if there interested. I'm going to buy the stuff after next pay day to do the prototype, and go from there
