Right so when I brake you can hear the rear brakes, not sure how to describe the sound, but is there a particular sound you should look out for to tell when they are wearing thin and need replacing?

I dont fancy struffling taking the drum off to find there fine, but I dont want to forget about it,

not sure how im going to get the drum off come to think of it
although I will have a spare wheel soon so ill cut a hole for the socket to go through then long jimmy bar and some swearing

Believe me when your brakepad is gone it makes an awfull? sound... iron rubbing on iron... you will hear that....
Probably it is dust coming from the brakepads, jack the rear end up get your wheels off and knock with a hammer at the drum you will see the dust falling out of the drum, mostly this helps.....
BTW. Please don't sweare in the neighbourhood of a 2cv, they don't like that...

come to think of it, there has been a lot of dust lately, being so dry here recently

I can picture what metal on metal sounds like as i did abour 2000 miles on my motor bike with no front brake pads left, metal on metal, so thats why i asked as it sounded similar* to this

*similar in that im quite a distance away in a 2 2cv and also other road noise and general noises around make it difficult to interperat!

The dust is wear from the brakepads, nothing to do with the weather momentairly.. but good try......

The dust gets between drum and brakepad making noise.....


But in your case when it sounds similair to your bike, I would check it out (remove drums)

Rear shoes last for roughly 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,602,000,000,000 miles, I can't imagine there's anything wrong with the shoes on your car. Sometimes they make a noise like a donkey being tossed off but this usually doesn't mean there's much wrong with them.

If you coped with this for 2 000 miles you should have no trouble driving a 2CV with non functioning rear brakes, which do the best part of f**k - all even when they're working*.

The rear shoes on my [1988] 2CV were knack'd at 84,000 miles.
One shoe was worn through,showing metal in places, and another had begun to "delaminate" [ie,the lining was parting company with the shoe].
The car had passed its MOT [with no advisory's] only 1,000miles before and it was only[ .... ] a corroded pipe begining to leak which prompted me to decide to give the rear brakes a complete overhaul.
