Buy a copy of 'it's not a mouse but a lion'. It's aimed at kit car types but has a lot of cheap stuff you can do at home in it. I have a copy 90 miles away at my parents house. With my pistons, barrels and valves.

Post Re: Engines
I can't remember ever fitting a set of new rings, I suppose I must have done it because I've replaced pistons before, but sitting here in the living room with the new rings in front of me, how do I best go about fitting the oil control ring?

I assume I put the perforated bit in first them the two thin rings above and below it and it all fits nicely when it's in the piston? Just looking at them they look like they might be a bit of a faff.

How i fitted pistons

box of rings
Image

rings come in numbered wallet No 1 is top
Image

Start with bottom ring oil controll is 3 part affair
Image

fit a thin steel ring
Image

park it on the skirt
Image

fit the expander ring
Image

drop the steel ring into the lower gap
Image

fit the second steel ring to the top of the groove gap the steel rings at 180*
Image

next is middle compression ring it has a top face
Image

you probably need pliers for this one
Image

same for top ring gap the comp rings 120* gaps at the top
Image

I use a Elora ring compressor
Image

have the skirt just out the copressor
Image

Place it on the oiled barrel
Image

you should just need thumb pressure- careful that the thin steel oil rings dont spring out or catch on any chamfer on the barrel
Image

Done
Image

fitting it to the engine later.

more to follow

Yes.
but assemble and torque the heads and turn over by hand as the argy pistons have been known to contact the heads at the "hump".

Sean
Edit ooh the good stuff-perfick circle are usually fine....if not perfect!
