I'm far too long in the tooth to be seen driving that - but, it's so absurd, I love it.

(Don't know how they retained the tax-free status with a new chassis and running gear, tho'. I'd check the V5 very carefully...

So, according to the V5, it's still running an Alfa engine. As for tax-free status, I'm assuming they've managed to prove that the original Dyanbe was manufactured before 31st December '72 as the registration date would imply that it isn't tax exempt.

I still want it too though! 8-)

Got a feeling that if the car was registered in the January of '73, the DVLA assume it was built sometime the previous year(especially if it's not British), so automatically give it a tax free status. I may be wrong though, before I'm shot down in flames

I often find that when I click on one of these Leboncoin links and the Google translate kicks in, it often says "2CV in it's own juice". WTF!?! Has it pissed itself?

"Dans son jus" means something along the lines of "It is what it is, and not a lot more". Basically, don't expect anything you can drive home... and don't moan when it turns out to be worse than you thought from the photos. It's probably been dragged out of a barn, maybe dusted off, and that's about your lot. The seller's setting your expectations fairly low.

That's fab, O-N - it looks pretty solid. I'm guessing you aren't as keen - or would rather avoid - patching up and filling holes?

Thanks for the info, Ken. Yes, the original seems to have been BUILT before 1st Jan 1973, so that's ok as it has a 1972 manufactured date.

However, I'm still not sure how they managed to retain the tax-exempt status after all the major mods it's had. It's a bit like having to register a kit-car, which I've had to do a couple of times. DVLA are very fussy about the provenance of the parts that make up the final car, and builders hoping to retain the tax-exempt status of the main donor for their new kit almost always fail because of the chassis and bodywork is different to that of the original car. This Dyane seemingly has an MGF chassis, suspension, steering and engine which would usually - in the kit car world - oblige it to have the MGF's reg details if anything, or else a 'Q' plate!

I may well be wrong, but I have a suspicion that it either somehow slipped through the 'change of details' process on a Friday afternoon, or else all that should have been declared wasn't. I wonder if all that was mentioned was the increase in engine size? I just don't see any other way that this car legitimately kept its tax-exempt status. Unless the builder has a friend at DVLA...

But, what a bonus that it's tax-free. 8-)

That thing's been around for donkey's. It would've been built long before they started to crack down - IIRC, it was in Cars & Car Conversions in the '80s, on an Alfa flat four and Lotus running gear - and certainly way before the introduction of historic vehicle tax.
