We used to have this discussion all the time when I was involved with organising Register's day. I guess this is a slightly different event to the international or other smaller camps as Registers is more to do with the car itself, so the more A-series there the better. We even went as far as one year adopting the continental method of charging more for entry of non A-series vehicles - or rather offering a discount for A-series vehicles. Being the UK though, this naturally caused a massive uproar so we ditched the idea.

Personally, I've been on both sides of the fence, having gone to events in non-A-series cars because I've had to, due or no other option, or actually choosing to leave the 2cv at home for reasons of speed/comfort/carrying capacity etc. I have no problem with jumping in whatever I have to hand and going along to support an event, if it means it is the difference between either getting to the event or staying at home.

On the other hand, I have also sighed to myself inwardly when people have arrived at the gate at Registers in a non-A-series with the weakest excuse possible for not bringing it - "I didn't think my 2cv would make it" and "oh I couldn't possibly drive it this far" were two amusing lines.

I think we are preaching to the converted a bit here anway - I'd hazard a guess and assume that most members of this forum have, and use an A-series at least semi-regularly and with the best will in the world we'd all be using them as much as we can so what's the problem in turning up in something else from time to time.

What he said! I own my Dyane and drive it every day because I like the car. I'm a member of 2CVGB and involved in the social side of things because I like (most of!) the other people that like the car.

"Trailer Queens" have been mentioned a couple of times somewhere, as being the same sort of people who are happy to turn up in something unrelated, but in my experience, they're usually the complete opposite!

I've gone to the DS/M rallies in the 2CV and X1/9 with no adverse comments, to the CX rallies in my 2CV and C5 (and CXs), to the 2CV and ccc nationals in the 2CV and x1/9 at one time or another.

The last CCC at Gaydon I went up by SM (not mine!) which was a lot quicker than the 2CV but about 4 times as thirsty. And at the DSM rally last year there were several non-citroen "classics" visiting.

I have the opinion that I'm there supporting the club(s) and using whichever car I have available.

Having said that I went to last year's French national in the x1/9 but that was because I hadn't taken it to France before and wanted to. I am taking the 2CV to the world meeting in July though - more room for wine than the fiat

So to a Firkin Freezing 2CV camp one year I went in a GS; although it broke down on the way when all the C matic fluid evaporated and which was stuck in 2nd gear. That was a Long way home in 2nd gear!

A 1971 Volvo 144 DL , a Skoda 105 Estelle Lux which I badged up as a Visa SuperX to get through the gate at Chilliam in '96 (nearly got away with it too), a mexican beetle, several CX's, A DS, a Wartburg, a Trabant. Sometimes people had really no idea what i'd turn up in.

To be honest if my A series wasn't working I'd go in whatever I had running because supporting the event is the most important thing. Cash on the gate getting into the club is its lifeblood and at the end of the day seeing my friends.

On the flip side I've attended DS rallies in a Dyane or a 2CV and the Ami as sometimes by doing this you can introduce new people to the cars. New people may become new members and so the club lives on...

I've turned up to meetings in/on several things over the years including PUG 306, Mazda MX5, Range Rover and Motor Bikes (as pillion). If it's a choice betweeen going in the 'wrong' thing or not going...I'll be wrong everytime


I only got cross once, when Wiltz turned up at the London International on the Moto Guzzi after a 12 hours night shift then riding down to London from Derbyshire to be there for as much as the meeting as possible - the 'guy' (loosley tranlated as TOSSER) on the gate asked him how he had the nerve to turn up to a 2CV event on 'that thing'.
I had arrived the night before in the Charleston with trailer tent and three teenagers - so no room for him anyway.

Obviously you would go in your A Series if you have one or if it's on the road, but I have no problem with folks turning up in / on anything they want. It adds another dimension to the meetings and puts bums on seats.
