Post Mehari 1978
It's finally happening: our Méhari will get its well deserved resoration. It's a 1978 one with disc brakes, the new dash and the new front panel. We own it since 1995, it has 75000km and it's still "dans son jus" with the usual cracks and sun damage to the panels. Nothing to serious, it looks like it all will be repairable, apart from the rear panel that will probably need replacement.

Until a couple of days ago, it looked lik this:

It still has a quite good subframe (no rotten parts) and the chassis is also in rather good condition. Brakes and electric wiring need some attention. The latter was rebuilt by one of the previous owners and it appears he had no idea what he was doing... :?

Some pic of the first day: almost all bits and parts came off quite easily, the windshield support frame is still to be done and that will probably be a bit harder... It's already soaking in "rost off ice". 8-)

Of course, the seats need replacement, this is what was left of them after almost 33 years. The last couple of years this misery was hidden under old Peugeot 104 seat covers... :lol:

If everything goes well, it should be finished by the end of the spring.
Engine will be checked (should be OK), brakes and wiring will be rebuilt, all panels will be restored/replaced and resprayed in the original colour (Beige Hoggar), new seats and new side covers will be fitted.

WOW!

I thought the frames came from the factory pre-rotted...

This is only the second time I've seen one identical to mine and in pretty much the same 'as it was' condition too.

Personally i think its a shame to respray it, there's fewer and fewer original meharis left. Weirdly, when 2CVGB Mehari man (Colin Jenkins) valued tmine for insurance, he gave it a higher value than a recently resprayed one because of her being original and unmolested.

keep it ratty!

If, on the other hand, you do decide to replace/respray panels I would be very interested in buying them as spares.

@George
Beige is a nice and authentic colour for A-types! I have Dyane in beige colorado, an Ami 8 in beige vanneau but my favourite one is my 2CV4 in beige albatros

@Samfieldhouse
I also like original Meharis that are a little ratty but on the other hand, most of the panels need repair (lots of small cracks) and without a repaint it would be covered with little spots...
