okay, so as I'm sure happens alot with older cars, the rubber door seals get a bit 'un-sealy'

my idea is to put wide sellotape along the rubber - and then mastic (non silicone) along the metal (the metal being the door frame) and then shut the door and leave it shut until the mastic goes off. my theory is that it will form a tight seal, then I carefully pull off the sellotape from the rubber and the mastic.....

a good idea?
a crap idea?
any thoughts??

Why not just fit new seals

Make sure you get the genuine ones. The new pattern seals are incredibly poor. I have had several split just from opening the door while fitting up the car.

You can indeed, or if you want them slightly bigger there are walruses too.

The seals aren't actually very spongy. If they're not split there is probably little to be gained from replacing them. I'd try adjusting the doors before splashing out on new seals. A lot of cars that have been in bits at some point have had the adjustment shims that live between the door and the hinge mislaid. That tends to cause huge gaps.

The seals are a faff to replace, you need to force them into their channel bit by bit. It is dull, I'd only do it if the seal is physically damaged. As I said earlier ask for the genuine Citroen ones, the pattern seals are less than stellar. ECAS sell them.

Willami, whilst your idea might possibly work in practice - tho' the extra friction against the new cured sealant instead of painted metal may cause the old rubber seal to bind and distort as you open and close your door - I think it would very likely look pretty awful. The sealant will spread out unevenly when you first close the door against it and it will look like the trail from an inebriated slug.
