I may be very pessimistic here, thinking that is already too late. Since the industrial revolution, where we created a dependency of oil, quality of life went so quickly ahead. The waste products from it is ruin the planet, the air we breathe, water we drink, food we eat and lately buggering our minds too. Who on earth has the power and/or the will to say no to oil, nobody. We are obsessed with money and greed add snobbery, prestige and ignorance. I fear it is too late to change. Mother Nature will just change whether we like it or not. We are totally insignificant in this picture
I live every day as it was my last and very happy this way. I hope my kids and their kids don’t suffer living their lives.

That's about the size of it Viking. :D
By the time we reach a point where all the different interests or factions are ready to put aside their differences and co-operate it will be too late for us all anyway.

Once you accept that as fact, and just concentrate on living your own life as best you can then it gets easier, but not much. It's a bit like standing on a Zebra crossing watching a large truck heading towards you. You could simply chose to ignore it, given that you have the right of way, or you could be practical by jumping out of the way and on to the safety of the pavement.

In the first example you would be in absolutely in the right, and they could even write "I definitely had right of way" on your gravestone if it helps, but you'd still be dead. Dead right, I suppose.

In the second example, even though on paper you had the right, in practice you were forced to do something else entirely. You may not have wanted to do it, but you did it because you're not stupid. So by not doggedly sticking to a pre- existing law, or principle, you survived to see happier times.

There's a moral in there somewhere. :?

Can't decide whether this is genius or one of the silliest inventions ever...

I like the custom painted one, you too can be Captain Nemo. I can imagine the 'fun' some folk will have with a shark painted one too, right up until they are harpooned.

Now, any ex-pat Brits living in France tuned in?
What I would like to ask is how easy or difficult you found it to assimilate? How long did it take to grasp a sufficient command of the language, and how difficult/ exasperating/infuriating was it to do so? or was it a breeze?

The reason I ask is that neither the wife or I speak a word of French. And for a couple that intend to retire there it's a problem. For me German came quite easy as it's a similar tongue to our own, the wife lived in Holland for three years and picked up Dutch, but for some reason both of us are dreading learning French.

Top tip: just go there, immerse yourselves in French (ie try to minimise your speaking of English for 3 months) AND take 2hrs of lessons a day for a month with a native French speaker. You'll be parling comme un gauloise in pas de temps... AND you'll make friends with the locals quickly!

Thanks hardy. I have Rosetta stone, but pardonmy northern bluntness, it sounds such a feminine language, I much prefer a JA! to a Oui.

Completely unrelated, but as I write the song 'cat's in the cradle' has come on the radio, always poignant for me that is, just what I did to my kids regretfully.
