Rob,
if the 'factory set' gap on those plugs is 1mm, a standard 2CV coil will struggle to produce enough kV for a spark in sub-zero starting conditions.

With conventional plugs, the gaps should be set to 0.6mm in Winter...

okay, well i've got some standard, new and unused ngk's i can put in her if we get another freeze, but this morning (now slightly milder temps) she started perfectly, first time, no choke at all! and after work tonight when she normally wouldnt start when sat for longer than 4 hours, she started first time, again no choke! :)
