I've managed to get hold of a Harley Davidson rev counter at the right money.
Apart from the question of where I'm going to mount it there's the question of wiring.

There are three wires coming from it. A black one, a red one and an orange one.

I assume the black one is earth as it's black and it's still got a ring connector attached. Not sure about the other two though.

To the + and - on the coil?

Red can be the 12v/live wire, from your ignition switch. Connect the orange one with the - on the coil and it should work I guess.

I've got a Honda rev counter, with three wires and just tried the wiring untill it worked.

Probably red going to the coil (the ignition side) not the + side
orange will be the light bulb (asuming theres a lightbulb inside)!!

the upper gauge is a rev counter!!

black is earth
red(+) feed from ignition on wire somewhere in the rats nest
orange is trigger(-) on coil
illumination will have to be by a seperate bulb holder with is own (+) and it earths through the body of the tach

edit orange is used as (+) on newer harley so try swapping the (+) and trigger wire if it doesnt work, they are quite robust and mine never suffered any damage trying to sort mine

got Harley tachos on 2 of our Dyanes, so I can check the wiring colours over the w/e.

Both of them have the instrument light fed direct from the '12 volts in' supply, so they're on when ever the ignition is on, maybe a way of drying out any moisture which got past the bezel seal on the bikes?

Why bother with a rev counter in an A series? When your ears start to bleed thats the sign that you need to change gear

It was only when we were climbing up various Alpine passes in August that made me wonder what the engine was actually doing. First gear for miles on end makes me worry and your ears become numb to the racket after the first 5 miles or so.

Pfffftt, you just think it's going to go faster...

Is'nt the original idea of the 2CV that one changes gear when [or just before] the needle reaches the red mark on the Speedometer.
It's not exactly "rocket science" not to rev the engine past the red mark at 18,38 & 55mph*.

*IIRC .....without going outside to look at the speedo on my own car .....before any anorak corrects me
